What Technologies Are Used in Cave Mapping?

Table of Contents

The first step to exploring a cave is mapping it. Once you know the location of the cave, you can begin preparing for exploration. Maps are used to mark the boundaries of the cave, and establish access points for future explorers. Because access to many caves is limited and monitored, mapping a cave before exploring it is essential.
The various technologies used in mapping caves include surveying, photogrammetry and lidar. These tools are important to ensure that explorers have enough information about every part of a cave that they want to explore. While surveying cannot be done in every type of cave or under all circumstances, itג€™s an indispensable tool for caves that are accessible or near-enough for a safe reconnaissance expedition. Hereג€™s more about these technologies and how theyג€™re used in cave mapping.

What Is Cave Technology?

Cave mapping is a process that includes many different technologies. One of the most common technologies used in mapping caves is surveying. Surveying is a technique that uses laser beams to measure distances and angles, as well as depth, to measure surface features such as topography, caverns and passages. Surveyors with lidar can also map the caveג€™s interior using this technology. To survey a cave, surveyors use lidar to create 3D maps of the cave entrance and surface area. This technology is useful for creating maps at short distance from the cave entrance or from the surface above it, which are both dangerous locations for surveyors due to high risk of collapse in these areas. In addition to surveyors, photogrammetry plays an important role in modern cave mapping. Photogrammetry uses digital photos taken by hand-held devices or cameras on helicopters or drones to create 3D models of various surfaces within a cave system. The use of photogrammetry allows researchers to quickly produce accurate maps of caves with large and complex terrain structures.

What Are the Equipments Used To Explore the Caves?

Surveying is the most commonly used technology in mapping caves. Itג€™s a simple way to map a cave without any equipment or special skills. This method involves using lines and dots of varying sizes on paper or digital maps that are then digitized or photogrammetered into the computer.
As you can see, these tools are indispensable for exploring caves. They help you determine how deep, long and wide a cave is before getting inside. These methods give explorers an idea of what they can expect when they explore a cave, ensuring that they’re prepared.
Laser scanning is one of the few techniques that cannot be applied in all types of caves because it requires expensive equipment and trained personnel to work effectively. There may be no point in surveying or mapping a cave if it is too difficult to access. However, lidar mapping can be done by hand and doesn’t require specialized training or equipment like laser scanning does, making it much more accessible and easy to use than laser scanning. Lidar uses light pulses emitted from lasers to create images of objects in three dimensions. Lidar creates highly detailed images that include data points such as distance from the lidar beam source and height above the ground floor.

What Is Cave Mapping Called?

Mapping a cave is called surveying. This includes mapping the caveג€™s boundaries and determining its size. To accomplish this, surveyors use light-based technologies to measure the caveג€™s surface and how it changes over time. Photogrammetry uses a camera system to take images of a cave as it changes over time. Lidar (light detection and ranging) is an advanced type of surveying that measures distance by illuminating inside the cave with lidar beams.

What Are the Methods of Cave Mapping?

Methods of mapping caves include surveying, photogrammetry and lidar. Cave mapping is a complex process that can be done with these three methods.
Surveying is the most common way to map caves, but itג€™s not always an option. Surveys can be limited by dangers like water flow, size or narrowness. For example, surveys for deep caves are difficult because the cave entrance may not be accessible. If a survey is impossible or impractical, then photogrammetry and lidar are used to create maps of the cave.
Photogrammetry takes input from multiple images and uses computer-aided design (CAD) software to assemble them into a 3D model of the cave. This allows for accurate measurements of the cave’s dimensions and depths. Photogrammetry also provides maps of different areas within the cave and can provide additional information about such things as variations in temperature, humidity and other scientific data that could help explorers navigate a specific area of a cave more efficiently.

Hi, Welcome to my caving world!
I've been caving for the past 23 years, and through these years, I have learned so much about caving life and its techniques. I genuinely believe that caving is one of the most fascinating activities out there, and if you haven't tried it yet, you should!

About Me

The exploration of natural or artificial caverns from casual trips to caves with well-established trails to expeditions into remote and largely unexplored caverns is a great passion for me for the past 15 years. Sharing it here with you is my new hobby so I hope  you enjoy :)
